Fifteen Horses Seized in Neglect Investigation: Bend Woman Charged with Animal Neglect

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) recently seized fifteen horses in a neglect investigation, leading to charges of animal neglect against a Bend woman. Lt. Bryan Husband with DCSO described the condition of the horses as dehydrated and underweight, with some unable to stand for most of the day. The investigation began on March 6 after reports of neglect on a ranch in Bend owned by Jean Poirier, 66.

After several days of investigation and veterinary exams, it was determined that the horses required immediate intervention, including veterinary care, hoof care, and proper feeding. Poirier cooperated with authorities and surrendered the horses on March 14. The horses, ranging from 13 to 29 years old, were transferred to DCSO’s Rescue Ranch for rehabilitation.

The seized horses are currently receiving care and showing signs of improvement. Poirier is facing 16 counts of second-degree animal neglect, with a plea hearing scheduled for May 31. Once the horses are deemed adoptable, they will be listed on DCSO’s website for potential adoption.

The names of 14 of the seized horses were listed in court documents, including Smart HighBrow Chex, Docs Frost, Britches, Straight N Shiny, Straight N Boogey, Honey Bee, Sunny Sugar Spark, Especial Delta, Zanzalittle, She’s a Shiny Olena, Tuffy Sue, New Diamond Twist, Easter Chic, and NicHotRod Cat Commander.

The 17 dogs found on the property were in better condition and allowed to remain with Poirier. DCSO emphasized the seriousness of the situation, with the neglect case potentially escalating to a felony due to the number of animals involved. The investigation and care for the seized animals highlight the importance of proper animal welfare and the consequences of neglect.
