Extreme Adventurer Aldo Kane: A Life of Adventure and Exploration
Aldo Kane: From Elite Commando to Extreme Adventurer
Aldo Kane’s journey from joining the Royal Marines at 16 to becoming one of the youngest Elite Commando Reconnaissance Snipers in the UK armed forces kick-started his career as an extreme adventurer. His training in survival, orienteering, and signalling prepared him for some of the world’s most extreme environments, from Northern Ireland to the Middle East.
One of Kane’s most challenging expeditions was rowing across the Atlantic with Team Essence, completing the journey from mainland Europe to mainland South America in 50 days, 10 hours, and 36 minutes. The uncertainty of the expedition, coupled with the vastness and loneliness of the Atlantic Ocean, made it a true adventure in every sense.
Now running Vertical Planet, a company that provides safety consultation for TV and film crews in high-risk environments, Kane has worked in some of the most extreme environments, including active volcanoes. Filming Will Smith inside Mount Yasur in Vanuatu during an eruption was one of his most exciting projects, despite the dangerous conditions.
Reflecting on the role of exploration in the 21st century, Kane emphasizes the importance of leaving as little trace as possible and giving back to local communities. He believes in telling stories connected to environmental and climate change, using his platform to educate and inspire others.
When asked about the best advice he’s ever received, Kane highlights the power of thoughts in shaping reality. For aspiring travelers, he encourages starting small and taking the first step towards adventure.
For Kane, adventure means expanding his mind, understanding who he is, and how he fits into the world. His experiences and challenges help him learn, grow, and achieve new heights in his exploration of the unknown.
Aldo Kane’s partnership with Exodus Travel on the Aldo Kane Exodus Collection offers tours to destinations he has visited, inviting travelers to experience the thrill of adventure in places like the Okavango Delta in Botswana and the Canadian Rockies.
Published in the Jul/Aug 2023 issue of National Geographic Traveller (UK), Aldo Kane’s story is a testament to the power of exploration, resilience, and the pursuit of adventure in the modern world.
