PAWS Chicago Launches Animal Crisis Fund to Save Homeless Pets
CHICAGO (WLS) — As Chicago grapples with a growing homeless pet crisis, PAWS Chicago has stepped in to launch a new initiative aimed at treating and saving more animals in need.
In 2023, the city’s impoundment facility, Chicago Animal Care & Control, saw a significant increase in the number of dogs and cats entering shelters, leading to a 22.7% rise in euthanasia rates. This marked a troubling reversal of progress in the city’s efforts to become a No Kill city where all healthy and treatable animals are saved.
PAWS Chicago, the largest transfer partner of CACC, played a crucial role in rescuing a substantial number of pets at risk of euthanasia. By increasing their intake and providing necessary medical treatments, PAWS Chicago was able to save hundreds of cats and dogs from being euthanized.
As the homeless pet crisis continues to escalate, PAWS Chicago is calling on the community to support their efforts through the newly established Chicago Animal Crisis Fund. Donations to the fund will go towards the medical care and treatment of pets transferred from CACC to PAWS Chicago, as well as other supportive programs aimed at saving vulnerable animals.
“We are facing a critical situation as we head into the warmer months, which typically bring an influx of homeless pets,” said Susanna Wickham, CEO of PAWS Chicago. “We urge our animal-loving community to join us in this important mission to save as many lives as possible.”
