Students at West Virginia University Inspired by Pandemic to Pursue Nursing Careers
As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to challenge healthcare professionals across the country, students at West Virginia University are stepping up to the plate to answer the call for more nurses in the field. Despite the physical and emotional toll the pandemic has taken on nursing professionals, these students are finding motivation and inspiration to pursue their dreams of becoming nurses.
Ateria Walker, a junior in the WVU School of Nursing, shared how the pandemic has only fueled her desire to become a nurse. Witnessing the impact of Covid-19 firsthand at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, Walker saw patient-to-staff ratios increase and many nurses become infected with the virus. Despite the challenges, she remains determined to pursue her goal of becoming a nurse.
The WVU School of Nursing has implemented a plan to address the nursing shortage during the pandemic, with students, faculty, and retired nurses stepping up to meet the increased demand for healthcare professionals. Petra Vasale, a senior in the BSN program at the Beckley campus, emphasized the opportunities that have arisen for nurses during this challenging time.
While some nurses have left the profession, Vasale finds inspiration in those who have stayed and rediscovered their passion for nursing. She looks forward to learning from experienced nurses and is confident in her ability to provide quality care to patients.
Despite the fears and challenges presented by the pandemic, these students are prepared to enter the field of nursing with resilience, compassion, and a strong sense of purpose. As they continue their education and training, they are eager to make a difference in the lives of patients and contribute to the healthcare system during this critical time.
