Woman in Volusia County Faces 20 Counts of Aggravated Animal Cruelty After Dead Pets Found in Home
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office made a shocking discovery on Monday when they found several dead pets, including a dog, cat, and birds, inside a home in DeLand. The resident, 37-year-old Ashley Boucher, is now facing 20 counts of aggravated animal cruelty and eight counts of confinement of animals without sufficient food, water, or exercise.
Deputies were called to the home after receiving complaints about a foul smell. Upon arrival, they found the deceased animals and several others in emaciated conditions, including dogs, cats, snakes, lizards, and even a tarantula. Animal control was called to the scene to care for the surviving animals.
Boucher was not present when officials first entered the home but later returned and admitted that caring for the animals had become overwhelming. She claimed to be unaware of the severity of the animals’ conditions and it appears that they were not being fed regularly.
Boucher has been taken into custody and will be booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges. The total bond for her charges amounts to $54,000. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of proper care and treatment of animals, and the consequences of neglecting their well-being.
