Japan Teen Finds Personal Growth in Military Youth of the Year Competition
The story of Asiel Morales, a 17-year-old student at Zama Middle High School in Japan, is one of resilience, growth, and inspiration. Despite falling short of being named the 2024 Military Youth of the Year, Asiel’s journey through the competition was a transformative experience for him.
Selected as Camp Zama’s winner and competing at the regional level in Iwakuni, Japan, Asiel faced tough competition from other outstanding teens. However, he approached the challenge with determination and a desire to convey a message to his peers. Through a series of essays on his experience as a military child, Asiel shared his story with honesty and authenticity.
The competition not only allowed Asiel to reflect on his life as a military child but also provided him with the opportunity to give back to his community. From hosting cultural events to volunteering with local organizations, Asiel’s commitment to service and leadership shines through.
For Asiel, the competition was not about seeking recognition but about encouraging his peers and future military children to embrace their opportunities and experiences. He hopes to inspire others to slow down, appreciate the journey, and notice the beauty in the small things in life.
As Asiel navigates the end of his high school career, he remains focused on making a positive impact and embracing the power of youth. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of resilience, perseverance, and the value of giving back to others.
