Rising Trend of Animal Surrenders: AWSS Appeals for Support
The Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) is facing a concerning trend as they have seen a rise in the surrendering of animals, particularly dogs, over the past few months. The primary reason behind this increase is the growing number of pet owners who are forced to downsize or relocate to pet-unfriendly housing options.
Many pet owners are left with the heartbreaking decision of choosing between their beloved pets and their living situation. With limited accommodation options and affordability constraints, more and more pet owners are opting to surrender their pets to organizations like AWSS in the hopes that they will find a new loving home.
AWSS general manager Jessica Perrins expressed the organization’s commitment to caring for every animal that comes through their doors, regardless of the circumstances. Since January, AWSS has taken in 96 surrendered dogs, while adoption rates have been declining.
The organization is now calling on the community to support their cause by considering pet adoption, promoting pet sterilization, and raising awareness about the issue. Perrins emphasized the importance of finding forever homes for their rescues and highlighted the financial strain that the increase in surrenders has placed on the organization.
To help AWSS continue their vital work, they are encouraging people to adopt a pet from them or make a donation in cash or kind. For more information on adopting a pet or making a donation, interested individuals can contact AWSS at 021 883 9129 or email info@awss.co.za. Let’s come together to support AWSS and ensure that every animal in their care finds a loving home.
