Stony Brook University’s Fine Arts Organization Provides Creative Haven for Students
Stony Brook University students have found a new haven for their artistic expression in the form of the Fine Arts Organization (FAO), which officially launched in fall 2023. Every Friday, students gather in the painting studio at the Staller Center for the Arts, eager to unleash their creativity onto canvases and share their passion for art.
FAO founder and President John Ericksen’s personal journey with art began after undergoing brain surgery in high school, which left him emotionally overwhelmed and searching for an outlet. This led him to discover the therapeutic power of art, sparking his mission to create a space where students could freely express themselves without constraints.
Unlike other art-related clubs on campus, FAO offers an open art studio with no specific guidelines, allowing students to experiment with different styles and mediums in a relaxed and supportive environment. Members like freshman Yan Lin appreciate the freedom to work on their own projects and collaborate with fellow artists.
Despite being a new club, FAO has quickly become a vital resource for students seeking a creative outlet. Ericksen personally funds the club’s activities until they become eligible for funding from the Undergraduate Student Government, demonstrating his dedication to supporting students’ artistic endeavors.
FAO’s studio exudes a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, inspiring students like freshman Henna So to spend hours sketching, coloring, and listening to music. The club’s emphasis on creativity and inclusivity sets it apart from traditional campus organizations, attracting members who share a genuine love for art.
For Ericksen, art has been a transformative force that has helped him navigate life’s challenges and connect with others through shared experiences. Through FAO, he hopes to provide a space where students can find solace, inspiration, and a sense of community through their shared passion for art.
As the club continues to grow and evolve, it remains a beacon of creativity on Stony Brook University’s campus, offering students a place to explore their artistic talents and forge lasting connections with like-minded individuals.
