New Initiative Launched in Khayelitsha to Foster Creativity and Improve Communication and Motor Skills in Children
A new initiative aimed at fostering creativity and improving communication and motor skills in children was recently launched in Khayelitsha. The Lingomso ‘Our Future’ project, also known as the Lingomso Elihle Painting and Drawing Project, is an after-school program designed to nurture children’s skills for the future.
The project, a collaborative effort between the City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate and the Community Development Worker (CDW) program, focuses on using arts as a vehicle for communication and environmental awareness. Children participating in the program are able to explore different forms of self-expression through crafts and creativity, while also learning about the importance of recycling and environmental stewardship.
Grant Twigg, Mayco member for urban waste management, expressed the city’s commitment to investing in the development of youth and fostering a sense of community through initiatives like the Lingomso ‘Our Future’ project. The program aims to empower learners with the tools they need to navigate the challenges of tomorrow.
In addition to providing art supplies, the CDW also recognized the Noluntu Soup Kitchen as a beneficiary of the project. The kitchen received support in the form of large pots, gas stoves, plastic basins, perishables, and compost bins.
If any similar community initiatives in the city would like to be considered for future assistance, they can contact the Subcouncil offices within their Ward or email [email protected]
The launch of the Lingomso ‘Our Future’ project highlights the power of community-driven initiatives in effecting tangible change. Through creative expression and skill-building activities, the project aims to make a positive impact on the youth of Khayelitsha.
