Celebrating a Decade of Creativity and Expression at the Cuban Art Factory in Havana

Cuban Art Factory in Havana: A Space for Expression and Creativity amid Political Challenges

The Cuban Art Factory in Havana Celebrates 10 Years of Creativity and Expression

HAVANA, March 24 — In the heart of Havana, the privately-funded Cuban Art Factory (FAC) has been a beacon of creativity and expression for the past ten years. Housed in a former train station, the FAC has become a renowned gallery and nightclub, providing a space for local talent to showcase their creations in a country where freedom of expression is often limited.

Every week, from Thursday to Sunday, the FAC opens its doors to hundreds of visitors who pay a nominal fee to experience music concerts, plays, dance performances, and modern art exhibits. The eclectic mix of offerings includes techno music nights, plastic works exhibits, photography displays, fashion shows, and more.

Olivia Rodriguez, a 30-year-old musician, expressed her awe at the diversity of art on display at the FAC, stating, “Here, you can see things you couldn’t even imagine.” The FAC recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a performance by renowned Cuban salsa singer Issac Delgado, drawing crowds of art enthusiasts and music lovers.

X Alfonso, the founder of the FAC, emphasized the importance of focusing on art and creativity in a country where political dissent can lead to imprisonment. Despite facing challenges and controversies, Alfonso remains committed to providing a platform for artists to express themselves freely.

The FAC’s success has not been without its obstacles, especially in recent years with the tightening of sanctions and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on tourism in Cuba. However, the FAC continues to thrive, providing around 300 jobs and operating as a self-financed entity without external sponsors.

As Cuba grapples with economic challenges and power outages, the FAC stands as a symbol of resilience and creativity in the face of adversity. Alfonso proudly states, “The most important thing is that the factory is a living organism, living in Cuba, with all the needs and problems that exist. But it is still alive and still trying… to survive.”

Despite the ups and downs, the Cuban Art Factory remains a vibrant hub of artistic expression and cultural exchange, attracting visitors from around the world to experience the unique blend of creativity and innovation that defines Havana’s art scene.
