The Importance of Black Women Traveling: Insights from Deidre Mathis

Deidre Mathis, a Black travel expert, is on a mission to encourage Black women to explore the world and experience new cultures. With 48 countries under her belt, including 19 solo trips, Mathis believes that travel is a necessity rather than a luxury for Black women.

In an interview with Fox 26, Mathis emphasized the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone and embracing the excitement of traveling to new destinations. She debunked the myth that Black women are not welcomed in other countries, sharing her own positive experiences of being embraced by locals wherever she goes.

For those hesitant to travel, Mathis recommends starting small with closer destinations like Puerto Rico, which doesn’t require a passport for U.S. citizens. Group trips can also be a great option for those who are uncomfortable with solo travel. Mathis also shared budget-friendly travel tips, such as using airline credit cards to accrue mileage for free flights.

As the owner of Wanderstay Hospitality Group, Mathis made history as the first Black woman to own and operate a hostel in the United States. Her success story serves as inspiration for Black women who aspire to explore the world and break barriers in the travel industry.

Overall, Mathis’s message is clear: Black women deserve to see the world, experience new cultures, and create lasting memories through travel. With the right mindset and resources, the possibilities are endless.
