Norwalk Police Investigate Case of 60 Animals Living in Filth
Norwalk police are currently investigating a disturbing case involving 60 animals living in deplorable conditions at a Norwalk home. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa was called in to assist and ultimately removed the animals from the premises.
Officer Greg Hepperly described the scene as horrifying, with dog feces covering the floors and walls, flies everywhere, and multiple animals living in squalor. The rescue team discovered 57 dogs and puppies, along with three cats, some of which were confined to kennels while others roamed freely. Tragically, there were also deceased animals found on the property.
Animal welfare coordinator Robyn Dobernecker explained that situations like this often stem from animal hoarding, where individuals start with a few pets that multiply uncontrollably. The animals rescued were found to have fleas, skin issues, and hair loss, indicating neglect and poor living conditions.
Charges are pending against the homeowner, and both the ARL and Norwalk police are urging the public to report any suspected cases of animal abuse or neglect. Donations are being accepted to help care for the rescued animals, who will hopefully be put up for adoption once they are healthy.
This heartbreaking story serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need to speak up for those who cannot advocate for themselves. Download the KCCI app for updates on this case and other news stories.
