Wendell Epps: The New Voice of the Minnesota Lynx and Breaking Barriers in Broadcasting
Wendell Epps: The New Voice of the Minnesota Lynx
At just 22 years old, Wendell Epps has already made a name for himself in the world of sports broadcasting. The Minnesota Lynx recently announced Epps as their new radio play-by-play voice, making him the youngest in the league. But don’t let his age fool you – Epps is a seasoned veteran with four years of play-by-play announcing experience, a sports podcast host, and a former director of broadcasting at his college.
Epps’ journey to the Lynx started back in 2019 when he began calling games for High Point University. From men’s basketball to lacrosse, Epps quickly made a name for himself as a talented broadcaster. He also excelled in his studies, making the Dean’s List and serving as the student chapter president of the National Sports Media Association for two years.
Now, Epps is ready to take on the WNBA with the Lynx. Not only will he be the voice of all 40 Lynx regular season games, but he will also create exclusive team content across all digital platforms. This historic hire also marks the first time in organization history that both the Lynx and the Timberwolves have Black men as their main broadcast voices at the same time.
For Epps, this opportunity is about more than just calling games. As an African American with roots in Peru, he sees himself as a voice for minorities and a source of inspiration for all. His goal is to connect with people of all races and backgrounds, telling the stories of the players and the organization with energy and enthusiasm.
Epps’ journey to the Lynx was paved by his time with the Osceola Magic, Orlando’s G-League team, and the Orlando Magic. Through hard work and dedication, he made a lasting impression on the Magic representatives he met at a sports business symposium, ultimately landing a job with the team.
As Epps embarks on this new chapter with the Lynx, he knows that he is just getting started. With a strong broadcasting style and a passion for storytelling, he is ready to make his mark on the WNBA. And with his dedication to amplifying Black voices and empowering authentic storytelling, Epps is sure to be a valuable asset to the Lynx and the community as a whole.
