Challenges and Solutions in Nigeria’s Policing Regime: Insights from Godswill Akpabio’s Advocacy

Nigeria’s Quest for a Reformed Police Force: The Advocacy of Senator Godswill Akpabio

In recent events that have unfolded in Nigeria, the country’s quest for a reformed policing regime has been openly challenged. Two significant incidents have brought this issue to the forefront – the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations Ceremony and the National Dialogue on State Policing, organized by the House of Representatives. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu at both events held in Abuja.

During the Nigeria Police Awards ceremony, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh authored a piece titled “The Police and Akpabio’s Sermon on the Mount”, sparking a national discourse on the need for a police force that embodies the ideals of an enlightened democracy. Senator Godswill Akpabio, known for his leadership and governance antecedents, intervened with a broader perspective, emphasizing the importance of celebrating heroes and recognizing the contributions of individual police officers.

Akpabio made a strong case for a police force defined by internal ethical regeneration, restoration of professional standards, and the enhancement of the anti-corruption drive. He highlighted the challenges faced by the police in combating crime and called for support and cooperation from all stakeholders to build a stronger and more effective police force.

At the National Dialogue on State Policing, Akpabio reiterated his support for the establishment of state police, emphasizing the need for these departments to be free from political, religious, tribal, and ethnic influences. He warned against the misuse of state police powers for oppression or witch-hunting, stressing the importance of building a fair and just system for all Nigerians.

Akpabio’s advocacy for an effective and efficient police force is not new. As governor of Akwa Ibom State, he had previously advocated for state police as a solution to Nigeria’s security challenges. The Akpabio-led Senate has also taken steps towards improving policing, passing the Police Trust Fund budget and resolutions on manpower and hardware.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his administration’s commitment to transforming the police into a modern, professional, and accountable institution. However, there remains skepticism about the sustainability of these initiatives and the readiness of the police to reinvent themselves.

As the conversation on police reform continues, Senator Akpabio has offered direction and shown resolve to lead from the front. The ball is now in the court of Nigerians and the police force itself to work towards a reformed and effective policing system.
